Hurkacz – Davidovich Fokina: nine straight wins in Shanghai, one question from Beijing
Davidovich Fokina came from a set down to beat Hurkacz 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(6) in the Shanghai last sixteen. My match winner bet at 2.02 has landed: $102 net, and the Hurkacz streak here stops at nine wins.

Fifteen days after the Chengdu final, the same duel returns in the last sixteen of the Shanghai Masters, as the last match of the day on the Stadium Court, after Zverev-Bublik: the start time will depend on what happens before. On 29 September, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina got the better of Hubert Hurkacz, 6-4 7-6(7), for his second title of the season after Mallorca. This Tuesday the market barely splits them: 1.90 on Hurkacz at Bet365, 2.02 on the Spaniard at Betano.
Nine straight wins in Shanghai, one question left in Beijing
Hurkacz is the 2023 champion here and has not lost in Shanghai since: nine straight wins, three of them last week. He took care of Djokovic in the second round, his first career win over the Serb, then handled Yi Zhou in the next round. On the outdoor hard of the Stadium Court at Qizhong, his serve dictates the match.
The doubt comes from elsewhere. In Beijing on 5 October, a semi-final against De Minaur, Hurkacz retired trailing 6-4 3-2, described as barely able to run. The nature of the injury has not been made public, and the Pole already had a meniscus operation in 2024. He has played and won two matches here since, serve included. On Sunday, after Yi Zhou, his coach Gilles Cervara waved him towards the practice courts, joking. A wave is not a medical bulletin.
Davidovich Fokina survived Tiafoe
The Spaniard, world number 26 and 25th seed against the world number 34, played the tightest match of his run: a match point saved against Tiafoe, and a final tie-break to finish it. The first set was disturbed by an allergic reaction to a cream, treated on court. He is also coming back from a back injury that kept him out after Umag in July. Both players have had two days of rest.

| Second round | Djokovic, 6-4 6-3 | Brooksby, 6-1 6-3 |

What I am watching
- Hurkacz’s legs in the long rallies, the unknown since Beijing: the first lateral steps will tell whether he is running at full stretch;
- Davidovich Fokina’s freshness, two days after 2h47 on court against Tiafoe;
- the Pole’s first serve: eighteen aces against Yi Zhou, it is what holds his score together.
I am taking Davidovich Fokina at 2.02
At 2.02 with Betano, the market gives the Spaniard slightly less than a fifty-fifty chance, and on Tuesday morning it still had not moved: the price opened at 2.02 and has stayed there, while Hurkacz has drifted from 1.88 to 1.90 at Bet365. I make Davidovich Fokina 54 percent. The head-to-head belongs to him: 5-2, the Chengdu final included. That final convinced me of one thing: the Pole’s serve does not suffocate him, and he stood firm in the tight moments.
My scenario: rallies that stretch, a Hurkacz less dominant from the baseline than in his previous Shanghai appearances, and Spanish returns that go in. If that first serve keeps firing at the same rate, the bet stays alive, and the stake says so.
One unit, $100. Davidovich Fokina wins: $102 net; Hurkacz wins: the $100 is gone. To size this stake for your own bankroll, the Kelly calculator does the maths, and the public record keeps every bet I have made, won and lost.

The streak ends in a tie-break
Final score: 2-1 Davidovich Fokina, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(6), in two hours and two minutes. The first set went one way: breaks for Hurkacz in games two and four, no break point for the Spaniard, 6-1. The second turned, two service games taken from the Pole, 6-3, and both held serve to 6-6 in the third. Davidovich Fokina took the tie-break 8-6.
The freshness held: two days after 2h47 against Tiafoe, Davidovich Fokina played, and won, another deciding set in a tie-break. Hurkacz’s Shanghai streak stops at nine wins, and the match finished in the tight moments, right where the bet lived.
The bet has landed: one unit at 2.02 with Betano, $102 net. A match decided by two points is worth exactly the fifty-fifty the market showed all day: I made the Spaniard 54 percent, and it came through, narrowly.
