Hurkacz vs Rune: an 89% serve meets an eleven-month comeback

On Monday Rune won his first match in eleven months, in 2 hr 39 and after absorbing 32 aces. Against Hurkacz’s serve, 89% of games held, the 1.55 price is fair: no bet.

Kick-off :
H. Hurkacz – H. Rune · ATP · Wednesday 28 October · 6.30pm

On Monday in Basel Holger Rune won his first match in eleven months: 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 over Quentin Halys, in 2 hr 39, after absorbing 32 aces. On Wednesday he backs it up against Hubert Hurkacz, who beat Zizou Bergs on Tuesday. The Dane has not chosen the gentle road back.

Rune is coming back from a long way

Injured in the Achilles tendon in Stockholm in October 2025, Rune spent eleven months off the tour. His return dates from the Davis Cup in mid-September, two wins over Bulgaria; since then he lost his openers in Tokyo and Shanghai, then pulled out of Brussels ten days ago with his back locked, with nothing serious on the scans. The win over Halys is his first on tour since the injury, and it took him two hours thirty-nine. He has also beaten Hurkacz in their only meeting, in Paris in 2022, before everything that has happened to both of them.

In Basel Rune is at home: a final in 2022, semi-finals in 2023 and 2024, 11 wins in 14 matches. It is the one place on tour where his comeback looks like a matter of course.

Hurkacz’s serve is the data of the match

The Pole holds 89% of his service games over his last ten matches, a fast-room figure. His season adds up to two retirements, at Wimbledon and in the Beijing semi-final, and solid results everywhere else: the Chengdu final, a Shanghai quarter-final after a win over Djokovic, and the Bergs win on Tuesday. He says himself that his form is really very good.

Three things to watch:

  • Rune’s back, ten days after spasms described as nothing serious: no signal since, but it is the one unknown on his side.
  • Recovery: Rune played Monday, Hurkacz Tuesday; the Dane has an extra day in his legs.
  • The tie-break: Hurkacz plays more than one in four at the moment, and Rune’s comeback already produced two on Monday.

A price that leaves nothing to take

On Tuesday evening Hurkacz trades at 1.55 with Betano, Rune 2.62 with Bet365. With the margin taken out, the price gives the Pole about 63%: exactly my number. The 23.5-game total is 1.90 both ways, and the 2.5-game handicap 1.91 against 1.84. I went through every line, winner, games, sets: none of them shows a gap between what I read and what the market posts.

No bet on this last-16. The staking method has nothing to settle without a gap, and my public record loses nothing by waiting; the market has priced Rune’s comeback fairly. If you bet anyway: 18+, only bet what you can afford to lose.
