Medvedev vs Svrcina in Shanghai: the Russian returns from Beijing, and a 1.16 price that already says everything
Medvedev saw off Svrcina in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, as in both 2025 meetings; my Medvedev pick at 1.16, minimum stake, lands: $4 net.

On 5 October in Beijing, in a China Open semi-final, Daniil Medvedev hit a ball towards the stands; it hit a spectator in the eye, and the Russian was disqualified, stripped of his Beijing prize money, which the press puts between $220,000 and $285,000. He apologised and called it an accident. On Saturday in Shanghai, in his first match since, he beat Struff 4-6 6-4 6-3 with 21 aces. On Monday, in the third round, Dalibor Svrcina awaits him, a qualifier ranked 126th in the world.
A qualifier in the week of his season
Dalibor Svrcina plays his fifth match in Shanghai since 5 October, having entered the draw through qualifying:
- Harris, beaten 4-6 7-6(6) 7-5;
- Nishioka, beaten 5-2 after the Japanese player retired;
- Norrie, beaten 6-3 3-6 6-4;
- Etcheverry, beaten 6-3 3-6 7-5, with ten break points saved out of thirteen.
His autumn calendar knows no rest: the Jingshan Challenger, then Hangzhou in late September, then qualifying here from 5 October. At 24, ranked 126th, the Czech is living the densest week of his season, and it leads him to the most awkward opponent in the draw.
Medvedev, the hard-court benchmark of the year
The Russian remains the winningest player on the tour on hard courts in 2026, 31 wins against 9 defeats, with titles in Brisbane, Dubai and Hangzhou, and eight wins from his last nine matches. He is chasing a seventh ATP Finals appearance from eighth place in the race. Against Svrcina he leads two matches to none, both in straight sets in 2025: 6-1 6-1 here, 7-6(3) 6-4 in Toronto. His first match since Beijing answered the question of his state of mind: one set surrendered, two taken back, no letdown.
1.16: the market has done its work
At 1.16 with Unibet, the price gives Medvedev more than an 85 % chance, and I reach the same figure. Svrcina, who opened at 5.50, is now 6.00 with Betano. The official order of play for Monday has this match third on Grandstand 2, an outdoor court with no roof, after Tien–Ruud and then Lehecka–Jodar. Showers remain in the forecast for Shanghai; if they arrive, this match will be held up, but the hierarchy of this meeting will not change.
My pick: Medvedev at 1.16, minimum stake
I take Medvedev to win at 1.16 with Unibet, 0.25 units, the minimum stake: at that price my reading and the market coincide, and there is no net edge to defend. $25 staked for $4 of net profit if the Russian comes through, $25 lost if Svrcina pulls off the upset. The Kelly calculator says the same thing: when a price has already taken everything into account, the method rounds down. This pick goes into the public record, won or lost. 18+: only bet what you can afford to lose.
6-2, 6-3: Medvedev through in straight sets, as in 2025
Final score: Medvedev beats Svrcina 6-2, 6-3, on Grandstand 2 on Monday. The Czech held one game, the first; the Russian took the next five, two breaks included, and the first set 6-2. The second set repeated the shape: an early break, 5-1, one break taken back (3-5), 6-3. Third meeting, third straight-set win, after the 6-1 6-1 here in 2025 and the 7-6 6-4 in Toronto; the Czech’s fifth match in eight days ends there, in the third round.
The pick lands: Medvedev to win at 1.16 with Unibet, a minimum stake of 0.25 units, $4 net on $25 staked. At that price there was no edge to defend, and the match confirmed it: the odds had shortened again by kickoff, to 1.13. The minimum stake does what it says: it caps the return on a pick the market had already read.
