Shelton vs Kym in Basel: 44 aces to open, a wildcard the crowd carries

Ben Shelton opened Basel with three tie-breaks and 44 aces; Jerome Kym, ranked 222, waits for his home crowd in the evening session. At 1.33 the price has already picked its side, and I take nothing.

Kick-off :
B. Shelton – J. Kym · ATP · Thursday 29 October · 9.00am

Ben Shelton opened his tournament on Tuesday evening on the edge of the void: 44 aces, three tie-breaks, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 against Aleksandar Kovacevic, two hours and thirty-six minutes without a single break of serve. He avoided becoming the first top seed knocked out in the opening round at Basel since 2001. On the other half of the draw, Jerome Kym, ranked 222 and a tournament wildcard, saw off Arthur Rinderknech in 1 hour 41. Both men played on the same Tuesday: equal recovery.

Thursday’s order of play is out: this last 16 is the fifth match on Centre Court, after a Djokovic-Struff tie that does not start before 6 pm local time. It will be played in the evening, then, with no guaranteed time, in front of an arena that has been waiting for its Swiss player since Tuesday.

A rebuilt serve that delivers

Shelton changed his serve technique this autumn: a throwing motion, targets before the radar gun. “This is how you win on fast indoor courts”, he said after his 44 aces. Tuesday added one more proof: a sixth deciding-set tie-break won this season. A finalist here in 2024, he holds serve in more than eight games out of ten over his last ten matches, and his Turin Finals spot is already secured: Basel, for him, is for tuning, not for saving points.

The wildcard the crowd carries

Kym owes his place in the draw to the Swiss Indoors wildcard policy, which pushes Swiss players alongside Wawrinka and Stricker. At 23, he has just claimed his first ATP-tour win outside Gstaad, and he served it out himself: the only break of the match, his, at 5-4 in the second set, closed out on his first match point. “I have never served as relaxed as at 5-4 in the second set”, he told SRF. His autumn was spent on the Challenger tour, a Roanne semi-final included, and his serve numbers shone there: that is the trap.

The month of both men:

My numbers lie on this match

The serve estimates I work with put Kym at 81 per cent of service games won, almost at Shelton’s level: that is absurd, and I know it. Those numbers swallow a Challenger autumn, where returning games bite less. Recalibrated to tour level, they come down, and by how much? One good first round, a crowd pushing him on: that doubt does not turn into value. When my numbers contradict the market on one side and the tour hierarchy on the other, I follow neither.

At 1.33, the bet is already taken

At Wednesday noon, Shelton is priced at 1.33 with Bet365, up from a 1.26 opener; Kym has come down from 4.25 to 3.60 with Betano: the market edged a little closer to the Swiss, then stopped there. The probability behind 1.33 works out fast: three chances in four for the American.

I read the match the same way the market does: Shelton in front, tight games if the first set goes to a tie-break, which each of them plays in more than one set in three. Kym is the most dangerous outsider in the draw inside this arena. But on the total games and the handicaps alike, everything rests on two or three tie-break points: that edge is not measurable, so it is not takeable. No bet.

Passing on this last 16 is still a decision: the public record loses nothing by waiting for a fairer price. If you bet the match anyway, 18+, only bet what you can afford to lose.
