Zhou vs Musetti: a month without a match, and Musetti still at 1.20

Zhou wins 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, and my bet on Musetti at 1.20, minimum stake, is lost: both tie-breaks went the Chinese way, $25 lost.

Yi Zhou won his opening match at the Shanghai Masters through a deciding tie-break: 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4) against Mattia Bellucci, on Wednesday on the Chinese hard courts. Lorenzo Musetti has not played a competitive match since the US Open in early September. First meeting between the two, and a picture almost drawn in advance: the man who has already won here is cast as a bystander, the man coming back from a month out is the seed. Friday’s order of play puts this match at the end of the Stadium Court session, after Djokovic – Hurkacz: clear sky, 25 degrees recorded in the afternoon, a light wind, and an outdoor match in the evening.

Zhou has already won on this court

A wildcard entry, Zhou arrived in Shanghai after quick exits in Chengdu and at the China Open. Against Bellucci he held together the tight moments, third-set tie-break included: 12 aces and 9 break points saved. The tournament describes him as an attacking player, built on a forehand that takes the ball early and a constant willingness to finish at the net. That profile does not collect long rallies: he hunts the wrong-foot and the approach, which bothers an opponent short of rhythm more than anyone.

Musetti returns from a month without a match

Seeded, and therefore exempt from the first round, the Italian has not played since his US Open defeat. A finger fracture, reported in late September, cost him Tokyo on the way. He says the hand has healed and denies any discomfort; he is back to full training and has strung together two days of practice without pain in the finger, he said on Friday. Pain is not my subject here: rhythm is. A month away rarely gets paid off in the first round back, and rarely in the scoreline, more in the hold of the service games late in a set, when the second serve starts slowing down.

At 1.20, the market has already decided

Musetti is still priced at 1.20 with 1xbet, the odds recorded on Thursday evening when the bet was placed; on Friday morning the best price on the market stands at 1.222 with Betway, and Zhou remains 4.90 with Unibet: no movement since the bet was placed. At 1.20, the odds promise the Italian just over an 83% chance. I give him 73: the gap, in my reading, sits with the market, which has the injury return already priced in.

In the first set, three things will tell me whether I got it wrong:

  • the pace of Musetti’s service games: a month without competition shows up first on second serves, slower and shorter;
  • Zhou’s return position on those second serves: his forehand takes the ball early, and he will hunt the wrong-foot from the opening games;
  • his first approaches to the net: if Musetti passes him cleanly twice in a row, the class gap will come back to the surface very quickly.

My bet: Musetti, at the minimum stake

One prediction per preview, and the match winner as the only tennis market that gets settled. I take Musetti at 1.20 with 1xbet, with open eyes: 73% for me, more than 83% for the odds, so the edge is not on my side. The stake falls back to the minimum, 0.25 units, that is $25: if Musetti wins, the bet returns $5 net; if Zhou wins, it costs $25. Zhou at 4.90 would pay my reading better if he came through, but it is the same market exactly in reverse: one of the two only, and I stay on the side of class.

The stake is worked out with the Kelly calculator, and the result goes into the public record like everything else. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.

Zhou takes both tie-breaks, my bet falls

Final score: 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 to Zhou, in 2h28 on Stadium Court. Musetti took control of the second set, 6-3, then held his serve to the tie-break in both of the other sets: the month out did not cost him where I was watching for it, late in sets on second serves. If the comeback cost him anything, it was in the two tight ones, both taken by Zhou, 14 aces to 5: the Chinese player never needed a single break of the Italian’s serve to go through.

My bet falls with Musetti’s defeat: match winner at 1.20 with 1xbet, minimum stake of $25, $25 lost. I made the Italian 73%, the odds implied more than 83, and Zhou at 4.90 got the better of the two of us. The minimum stake did what it had to do: keep the bill down on a match I read as tight, from the wrong side.
