Arthur Gea beats Mensik 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to reach his first Masters 1000 quarter-final in Shanghai
For his first appearance in the main draw of a Masters 1000, Arthur Gea beat world No. 15 Jakub Mensik 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in Shanghai on Tuesday. The 21-year-old Frenchman, ranked 56th, will enter the Top 50 on Monday.

Before this week, Arthur Gea had never played a single match at a Masters 1000. His first main draw has already taken him to a quarter-final: on Tuesday in Shanghai he beat Jakub Mensik, ranked 15th, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, having knocked out Ben Shelton, world No. 4 and US Open runner-up, in the previous round. A first Top 10 scalp, a Top 50 debut guaranteed for Monday 19 October: at 21, the world No. 56 keeps climbing.
The serve holds, the return answers
As against Shelton, the match turned on the service patterns. Gea won 80 per cent of points behind his first serve and faced only two break points in two sets, answering every hard service game from Mensik with a comfortable hold of his own. The Czech cracked on his forehand: both sets ended on his errors, some of them sloppy at the net.
“It is incredible, I am very happy with this result. I had some revenge to take on the US Open. I returned well [against two big servers like Shelton and Mensik]. I was very focused throughout the match, like in the previous round,” Gea told the ATP, adding that Mensik had been “even better than Shelton on serve” but that he had “found the right rhythm”.
A season that has risen since Noumea
The result did not come out of nowhere. A Challenger title in Noumea in January, a first ATP title in Los Cabos in August, a US Open fourth round after six qualifying wins, then a last-16 run in Beijing last week: Gea has won 23 matches since July, two of them against Top 15 players. Against the Top 50 this season his record is seven wins and two defeats, and Mensik had been 19-0 on hard courts in 2026 against opponents outside the Top 50.
Hurkacz or Davidovich Fokina next
In the quarter-finals Gea will meet Hubert Hurkacz (34th) or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (26th), who play each other in Shanghai on Tuesday in a match the market barely separates, around 1.90 and 2.07 on Tuesday morning. Against Mensik, the Frenchman started as the outsider at 2.58 with 1xbet (1.57 for the Czech with Unibet) and won in straight sets.
“It is a lot of emotion. I am focused on what comes next, I will take a bit of time to enjoy it before getting back to work,” he added.
