Bundesliga: Neuer error hands Augsburg the fastest goal in the league’s history (2-2)

Eight seconds. The kick-off had just been taken when Manuel Neuer controlled the ball in his own box and tried to lift it over Augsburg’s press. Robin Fellhauer read the pass, intercepted it and rolled it into an empty net. The fastest goal in Bundesliga history arrived in Augsburg on Saturday, and Bayern Munich were the team conceding it.

A pass that never beat the press

A goalkeeper who plays out from the back wins ground for his block: the opponent runs towards the ball instead of running towards goal. The bet is that the first pass finds a free man. Neuer went long instead of short, Fellhauer sat on the flight of the ball, and nobody was left behind him: empty net, record gone.

A record that stood at nine seconds

The old mark was nine seconds, shared by Kevin Volland and Karim Bellarabi. Volland scored his against Bayern too. Fellhauer beats them by a second.

Bayern come back twice

After the break, Ismael Saibari levelled for the champions. On the hour, Neuer punched a Calvin Brackelmann shot straight back into play, the ball fell to Rodrigo Ribeiro and Augsburg led again. With ten minutes left, Nathaniel Brown equalised from Harry Kane’s cut-back (2-2).

The rest of the day ran through Mainz and Hoffenheim: Moussa Diaby, back in the side, scored for Leverkusen in a 4-3 win at Mainz, and Terem Moffi headed an equaliser for Hamburg, who won 3-2 at Hoffenheim.

Augsburg, Bayern’s bogey team

The point takes Bayern off the top of the table and lifts Augsburg to fifth. Bayern’s only defeat in their last 48 league matches came in January, against this same Augsburg side.
