Champions League: Olise sees red in Stavanger, Bayern concede a 3-3 draw and lose him for Arsenal
Two goals down at the break in Stavanger and then 3-2 up, Bayern conceded a 90th-minute equaliser after Michael Olise threw the ball at Zlatko Tripić’s face and was sent off; the suspension is automatic, and he will miss Arsenal on Wednesday.

Bayern Munich had the game in hand and let it go on a ball thrown in an opponent’s face. Two goals down at the break in Stavanger, on the second matchday of the Champions League, they led Viking 3-2 from the 71st minute, when Michael Olise, already booked, picked the ball up off the ground and sent it straight into Zlatko Tripić’s face. The referee saw it all: second yellow in the 74th minute, off. Down to ten, Bayern conceded Haugen’s equaliser in the 90th, from a Tripić pass.
Viking had gone at the game from the start: Stensness as early as the 2nd minute, Christiansen just before half-time (38th). Bayern turned it all around in seventeen minutes after a triple substitution: Kane from the spot (54th), Kane again (60th), Díaz (71st). Olise’s first booking had come for a shirt pull; the second, that ball thrown, ended his night.
“The No. 10 was cleverer than you”
Vincent Kompany did not protect his player. “He knows it was a stupid reaction. The No. 10 was cleverer than you”, said the Bayern head coach, who added: “I told Michael very clearly.” And he warned that these are “the kind of moments that can have a decisive impact on a season”. Harry Kane, on Canal+, called it a big mistake and moved on: on to the next game.
The club closes ranks, Germany argues
Nobody left the France international alone with the blame. Sporting director Max Eberl turned his fire on the Norwegian captain: “Zlatko Tripic played like a bastard. He wanted to win the match.” An internal fine? “We will discuss it calmly.” Christoph Kramer, on Prime Video, understands “Olise perfectly in this situation”: for the 2014 world champion, Tripic had gone looking for the provocation.
The bill is already written. Olise, 24, the No. 17 of a squad that counts him among its most creative players, collects the first red card of his career and the automatic ban that goes with it: he will miss the game against Arsenal on Wednesday 21 October. Bayern, who opened their campaign with a 5-0 against Bodø/Glimt, leave Norway with four points from two matchdays, and they will have to do without him for the next European night.
