PSG confirm Kvaratskhelia ACL rupture, surgery in the coming days

The club statement runs to a few lines. After Tuesday’s 4-2 win over Barcelona at the Parc des Princes, Paris Saint-Germain announce that Khvicha Kvaratskhelia “will undergo surgery in the coming days” after a “rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee”. The club stops there: no return date, no estimate. The fear we reported on Wednesday morning has now been settled, in the worst way.

The scene had said it all. In the 59th minute, in a challenge with Xavi Espart, the 25-year-old went down and could not put weight on his right leg. He was carried off the pitch by the PSG medical staff. Signed from Napoli in January 2025, Kvaratskhelia has won everything with Paris since, including the last two Champions League titles.

Nine months out, at least according to the press

PSG have set no timeline. ESPN notes that a ruptured ACL usually means at least nine months on the sidelines, which would leave the winger with almost nothing of the 2026-27 season. Sky Sports already rules him out of the Champions League trip to Aston Villa on December 8. Those schedules come from the media: the club has committed to nothing.

Lyon on Sunday, with a rebuilt attack

Kvaratskhelia is not the only absentee. Ousmane Dembélé, taken off in the 19th minute on Tuesday (left thigh), and Marquinhos (right thigh) are set to miss a few weeks. The calendar waits for nobody: Lyon visit the Parc des Princes on Sunday for the top match of Ligue 1 matchday 8. Both teams sit on 14 points, with Lyon first on goal difference.

The market has started to price the news. PSG are 1.47 with Betano on Wednesday morning, up from 1.43 at the opening. Lyon remain 7.00 with 10BET: the champions start as favourites, less clearly than before Tuesday. That price deserves a second look before you touch it: Lyon won 2-1 at the Parc des Princes on their last visit, in April, and Luis Enrique’s team sheet will not be known until close to kickoff.
