Shanghai Masters 1000: Rinderknech withdraws injured, Sinner pulls out too

Troubled by an abdominal injury, Arthur Rinderknech has cut short his Asian swing: out of Beijing, then out of Shanghai, where he reached last year’s final. World number one Jannik Sinner pulls out as well.

Shanghai Masters 1000: Rinderknech withdraws injured, Sinner pulls out too

Arthur Rinderknech has already returned home to France. Troubled by an abdominal injury, the French number three pulled out of the ATP 500 in Beijing on Thursday, then gave up on the Masters 1000 in Shanghai (7-18 October) twenty-four hours later. He had reached the final there last year.

650 points gone, and the top 50 with them

The withdrawal costs more than a shortened trip. An injury in that part of the body hits the serve first: every acceleration of the arm goes through the abdominal wall. Rinderknech loses the 650 points from his 2025 final and will drop out of the top 50. No return date has been announced, and the exact nature of the injury has not been made public.

Sinner pulls out as well

The draw also loses its world number one. On Saturday, Jannik Sinner announced on Instagram that he too will skip the Masters 1000 in Shanghai. “Unfortunately, I will not be able to play the Shanghai Masters 1000 as I had hoped,” wrote the Italian, without giving a reason.

The context is known: Sinner has not played since his Wimbledon title in mid-July, and he has been hampered by his right knee since the summer. His return has no date.

A thinner field before the first match

Days before the tournament begins, Shanghai already knows it will be played without last year’s finalist or the world number one. Rinderknech must rebuild a ranking stripped of its heaviest points; Sinner must finally set a date. In the meantime, the Asian swing goes on without them.
