Tennis essentials, 25 October: Musetti ends four-year wait in Lyon, Medvedev and Rybakina retain titles
Lorenzo Musetti beat Taylor Fritz in the Lyon final, his first title in four years; Daniil Medvedev retained his in Almaty and Elena Rybakina won in Ningbo. Arthur Fils let a semi-final slip in Brussels.

Four finals on this Sunday: a four-year wait ending in Lyon, two titles defended in Almaty and Ningbo, a demonstration in Osaka. The indoor week opens in Basel, where the draw holds some heavy first rounds.
Lyon: Musetti takes charge and ends the wait
Sixth seed at the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Lorenzo Musetti beat Taylor Fritz in the final (6-3, 6-4), taking control from the opening games of each set. A day earlier he had saved four match points against Flavio Cobolli (4-6, 6-2, 7-5). “The fighting spirit was the key,” said the Italian, who ends four years without a title and a run of seven straight final defeats (L’Équipe).
Almaty: Medvedev defends a trophy for the first time
A year after taking the title against Corentin Moutet, Daniil Medvedev kept his property by turning Nikoloz Basilashvili around in one hour 55 minutes: 6-7 [6], 6-1, 6-3. The 25th title of his career, and a first successful defence for a player who has been world No 1 and a Grand Slam champion (We Love Tennis).
Ningbo: Rybakina on a mission
Untouchable in the final against Leylah Fernandez (6-2, 6-2), Elena Rybakina won the WTA 500 in Ningbo, her first title since becoming world No 1, the 15th of her career. In the semi-final she had beaten world No 13 Diana Shnaider in straight sets (L’Équipe).
Brussels: Fils leaves empty-handed
Arthur Fils served for the match before falling in a deciding tie-break to Jan-Lennard Struff (6-4, 6-7 [7], 7-6 [5]), ranked 58th at 36. “I wonder how I managed to throw that match away,” said the world No 10 (L’Équipe), who let useful points slip in the race to the Turin Masters (15-22 November, We Love Tennis).
Basel: Mpetshi Perricard through qualifying, Djokovic awaits Humbert
Down at No 145, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard won two qualifying matches at the ATP 500 in Basel, one against Sebastián Báez (6-3, 3-6, 6-3), to reach the main draw of the tournament he won two years ago (L’Équipe). Novak Djokovic, 11th in the Race, opens against Ugo Humbert (We Love Tennis); Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s withdrawal spares Arthur Fils a first round against Hubert Hurkacz (We Love Tennis).
Monfils: “I’ll tell you everything” on Twitch on Monday
Gaël Monfils will speak live on Twitch on Monday from 6pm to 8pm, his first public words since the brutal end of his career. “When? Where? I’ll tell you everything,” he promised on Instagram (L’Équipe).
Osaka: Siniakova leaves no margin
Katerina Siniakova swept Ashlyn Krueger aside in the Osaka final (6-1, 6-0), the sixth singles title of her career (L’Équipe). In the same week, Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam singles champion, says she is close to her best level again and admits she would consider quitting if her three-year-old daughter asked her to (BBC).
