The FA has handed Sarina Wiegman a two-year extension: England’s head coach is now contracted until the end of Euro 2029, a reign of at least eight years.

Wiegman signs England extension through to end of Euro 2029

The FA has confirmed that Sarina Wiegman has signed a two-year extension to stay as England head coach until the end of Euro 2029. Her previous deal ran to the end of the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. “I am so happy to be able to carry on with this squad and cannot think of a better job in football,” said the 56-year-old Dutchwoman, who took over the Lionesses in September 2021 after Phil Neville.

Three consecutive Euros on the bench

Under Wiegman, England lifted Euro 2022 at Wembley against Germany (2-1), then Euro 2025 against Spain on penalties, the first English side, men or women, to win a major trophy abroad. The 2023 World Cup final was lost 1-0 to Spain. Before England, Wiegman had already won Euro 2017 with the Netherlands and reached the 2019 World Cup final. She is the second coach, after Germany’s Tina Theune, to win three consecutive Euros. “Sarina is an incredible coach with an unparalleled record in major tournaments,” said FA chief executive Mark Bullingham. “There is no one better to lead the Lionesses into the next two tournaments.”

Ukraine first, Brazil next

Her assistants Janneke Bijl and Arvid Smit and goalkeeping coach Darren Ward have also extended to 2029, according to The Guardian and ESPN; no salary has been reported. The first test comes quickly: in December England face Ukraine in a two-legged World Cup playoff, after brushing Greece aside 8-1 on aggregate. The new deal also covers the 2027 Nations League, the qualifying route for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. A rough year, including a 4-0 defeat by Spain and the playoff detour, has not shaken the FA’s trust: a five-time FIFA best coach, Wiegman will spend at least eight years on the England bench.
