Liverpool come from behind to beat Brentford 2-1, the last unbeaten side, but lose Szoboszlai and Frimpong

Trailing at half-time at the Gtech Community Stadium, Liverpool came from behind to beat the last unbeaten side in the Premier League. Keane Lewis-Potter had headed the Bees in front (44th). Victor Muñoz equalised from a Florian Wirtz pass (62nd), and Alexander Isak, back from a thigh injury, won it for the Reds after a Bradley Barcola lay-off (70th). Brentford finished with nine men: Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off just before the break (45+8, headbutt on Jeremy Jacquet after a VAR review) and Vitaly Janelt collected a second booking in stoppage time (90+2).

The Bees’ run ends at eight

Brentford had gone eight league games without defeat (two wins, six draws), the longest active run in the division. A first defeat of the season, then, for a side already fond of a draw: four in seven matches. They stay on 10 points, slip from fifth to sixth and watch Liverpool go above them (fifth, 12 points), with Manchester City strolling clear at the top on 21.

Szoboszlai then Frimpong: the costly part

Dominik Szoboszlai lasted barely half an hour, a recurrence of the hamstring injury he picked up on Hungary duty. Trey Nyoni, 19, replaced him. Jeremie Frimpong, on at the break for Ronald Araújo, went off minutes later with a muscle problem, Rio Ngumoha taking his place. No timeframe had been announced for either player at the final whistle.

“He came with an overload, he felt a tight hamstring,” Andoni Iraola, the Liverpool head coach, told Sky Sports, pointing at “another one coming from the international games”. He hopes the absence is a short one given the run of fixtures: Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday, then Brighton, Chelsea, Arsenal, Fenerbahçe and Crystal Palace before the next international break.

The treatment room was already busy:

  • Hugo Ekitike (Achilles) and Conor Bradley (knee), long-term absentees;
  • Giovanni Leoni (knee), return pushed back to the November break;
  • Cody Gakpo (ankle) back on the bench, Ryan Gravenberch out suspended.

What it changes for bettors

Liverpool kicked off at 2.60 with 1xbet: a shade over a one-in-three chance, the market reckoned. I had gone the other way in my match preview: Brentford or draw at 1.50 with Bet365, 0.25 units ($25). The bet is lost, and it will go into the public record like every other one. The double chance had drifted to 1.56 by kick-off: the market was already walking away from the Bees. 18+. Only bet what you can afford to lose.
