Monaco vs Lille: 3,000 young players invited to the Louis-II, Willy Sagnol honoured

“Stanis Idumbo and Willy Sagnol, a Rouge & Blanc from 1997 to 2000, will take part this Sunday in a big signing session from 1.45pm on the forecourt of the Stade Louis-II!” the club announced. An hour and a quarter before kick-off, 3,000 young registered players will fill the stands of the Louis-II for the visit of Lille, the eighth round of Ligue 1, on Sunday at 3pm.

“Tous au Stade” has opened the Louis-II to young players since 2021

The scheme, launched in 2021, invites every licensed player from the Ligue Méditerranée, the District Côte d’Azur and the neighbouring Italian clubs, each of them with two companions; registration closed on 14 October. The first edition gathered around 2,200 youngsters, and more than 4,000 filled the Louis-II in November 2025. The stadium is playing this season at reduced capacity, one stand remaining closed for renovation work.

Sagnol, 99 matches and the 2000 title

Signed from Saint-Étienne at 20, Sagnol wore the diagonal shirt 99 times between 1997 and 2000 and left with the 2000 French title. The tribute lands a month after the end of his Georgia adventure: sacked on 26 September, after a 1-0 defeat against Northern Ireland in the Nations League, he was replaced by Ramaz Svanadze.

Fourth against fifth, level on 14 points

The match matters more than the ceremony. Lille travel in fourth place, Monaco in fifth, both level on points. Monaco are unbeaten at home this season and beat Freiburg 3-0 in the Conference League on Thursday, but they folded 1-0 at Lorient last Sunday. Lille shipped four goals against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday. The market makes Monaco a measured favourite: 2.15 at 1xbet, Lille at 3.86 (odds recorded on 22 October).
