Tennis essentials, 13 October: Zverev seals year-end No. 1, Alcaraz already out, Gea into his first Masters 1000 quarter-finals

The Tuesday in Shanghai settled a ranking: Alexander Zverev, a winner over Alexander Bublik in three sets, is mathematically certain to end 2026 as world No. 1, a day after Carlos Alcaraz went out. The day also produced a French quarter-finalist, Arthur Gea, and emptied the top of the draw.

Zverev inherits the throne, and says so

7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (1) in two hours 40 minutes: the world No. 2 was pushed all the way by Bublik, two tie-breaks to get through, and he knows his luck. “The fact that I clinched the year-end No. 1 spot is of course down to Jannik’s absence, unfortunately”, he said in his press conference, promising “a special moment” when the rankings flip. The first German to end a year on top of the ATP, he will collect the trophy at the Finals in Turin (15-22 November); our piece has the match and the full quote.

Alcaraz falls, Bergs rises

The day before, Zizou Bergs, ranked 39th, had scored the biggest win of his career: 7-5, 7-6 (4) against Carlos Alcaraz, two sets, and the end of a six-match winning run for the recent Tokyo champion, as L’Équipe reports. “I only have negative thoughts coming to mind”, Alcaraz told We Love Tennis the next day, while Bjorn Borg saw him “becoming world No. 1 again”. Bergs plays Tommy Paul next.

Gea beats two top-15 players and reaches the quarters

Ben Shelton (world No. 4) then Jakub Mensik (No. 15): Arthur Gea qualified on Tuesday for the quarter-finals of his first Masters 1000, 7-6 (4), 6-4 over the Czech. The 21-year-old Frenchman, ranked 56th and certain to enter the top 50 on Monday 19 October, waits for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the last eight, the man who beat Hubert Hurkacz. “Not a miracle when you work hard every day”, was L’Équipe’s line; our piece breaks down the return that made the difference.

Fils lets Shanghai slip

Beaten in two sets, 7-5, 6-4, by Botic van de Zandschulp, with one break point converted out of nine, Arthur Fils left Shanghai with regrets: “I could have played this match ten times, maybe I would have won it eight times”, he told We Love Tennis. Sixth in the Race on arrival in China, the Frenchman is no longer sure of holding his place for the ATP Finals in Turin, RMC Sport notes, and Benoit Maylin tore into an “alarming tactical poverty”; three tournaments remain to react.

Vacherot hands back his title

The defending champion will defend nothing: Tommy Paul saw off Valentin Vacherot in two sets, 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 25, a year after the Monegasque’s title run. “I simply played very badly”, was his verdict to We Love Tennis, on a defeat his camp judges logical. Shanghai goes on without its outgoing champion, and without Alcaraz.

Lyon lands Cobolli

Frances Tiafoe has withdrawn from the Grand Prix Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (18-25 October) with a leg injury; the Lyon ATP 250, played at the LDLC Arena in Décines, replaced him within the day with another member of the top 10: Flavio Cobolli, ranked 7th and runner-up at the last French Open, We Love Tennis reports. With Lorenzo Musetti and Matteo Berrettini, Italy supplies three headline names to the field; the tournament loses nothing in quality.
