Nations League: Troy Parrott’s stunning goal, a 2-2 draw that keeps Austria top

In the 12th minute, Troy Parrott collected Adam Idah’s headed knockdown and found himself alone against the Austrian back line. A nutmeg on Philipp Lienhart, a feint to skip past the second defender, and the ball side-footed with his right boot between the legs of Florian Wiegele. “What an exceptional goal from Troy Parrott!” wrote L’Équipe on its live blog. Ireland led 1-0 at the Aviva Stadium.

That goal opened the scoring, but Austria came back for a 2-2 draw in the closing minutes: their first points dropped of the campaign, after starting with two 3-1 wins over Israel and Kosovo. Ireland still have not beaten this rival since November 2016.

For Parrott, a 24-year-old striker at Betis, it is a thirteenth goal in forty caps.

The market priced an Ireland win at 3.55

Before kick-off, an Ireland win traded at 3.55 with Unibet: a little over one chance in four. Austria started as favourites, and our match preview weighed both teams, odds included.

Austria stay top on their own

Beaten in Kosovo on matchday one, then 3-0 winners in Israel, Ireland held the leaders and stay on four points, level with Kosovo, who were held 0-0 by Israel on Thursday. Austria have seven points and lead League B Group C on their own; Israel have one.

On Sunday, Austria travel to Kosovo for matchday four (5pm UK time). Our Kosovo vs Austria preview is already online.
