Guimaraes completes Arsenal comeback against Leeds, Hincapie carried off

Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds 2-1 and moved level with leaders Manchester City, but Piero Hincapie was carried off after the final whistle, three days before hosting Lille in the Champions League.

Guimaraes completes Arsenal comeback against Leeds, Hincapie carried off

Leeds, fifth at kick-off, went ahead in the 55th minute through James Justin, who met a cross from Gabriel Gudmundsson. Arsenal had fallen behind for a third time in four league matches, three weeks after the 3-0 defeat at Brighton, and needed an hour to respond: Riccardo Calafiori equalised in the 62nd minute from Ben White’s knock-down, and Bruno Guimaraes placed his shot just inside the post in the 70th, set up by a backheel from Declan Rice. 2-1, a fifth win in six league games.

Guimaraes, a £75m summer signing, already lives at the rhythm of rescues. After scoring the first goal in the 2-0 win at Sunderland in September, the Brazilian again made the difference off the bench: he is the first player to score twice from the bench this season, both goals from outside the box. “Mikel Arteta made changes when he needed to and the substitutions gave Arsenal what they needed. That’s what champions do,” said Ally McCoist on TNT Sports.

A defence to patch up before Lille

Piero Hincapie, a late substitute, was carried off during the warm-down after the final whistle. Neither the nature nor the severity of the injury is known. Arsenal are without William Saliba (back), have conceded five goals in six league games after finishing last season with the division’s best defence, and Ezri Konsa, signed from Aston Villa, is still settling in. Kai Havertz is playing despite a hamstring problem picked up on international duty, and Christos Tzolis was injured with Greece.

The win moves Arsenal level with leaders Manchester City, who host Liverpool on Sunday. On Tuesday the Emirates welcomes Lille in the Champions League; the French club, fourth in Ligue 1, were at home to Le Havre on Saturday evening.
