Football essentials, 25 October: Manchester United humbled, Lille go top, Lyon lose Šulc for four months

Four English fixtures at 2pm, the Ligue 1 summit clash in Monaco, Inter at San Siro: the day played out before tonight’s 8pm clásico. Where things stand as we write.

Old Trafford: three goals conceded, a manager on the brink

Michael Carrick had left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench at kick-off, for what he called purely football reasons, and Manchester United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth. Eight games without a win in all competitions, one point above the relegation zone: L’Équipe sees Carrick, like Pierre Sage at Crystal Palace, sitting on an ejector seat. Our report of the collapse.

Anfield: Isak ends Brighton’s run

Alexander Isak scored for the third league game running, his sixth goal of the Premier League season, and Liverpool beat Brighton 2-0, only the Seagulls’ second defeat of the campaign. Florian Wirtz started, the opening goal went down as a Pascal Gross own goal, and Liverpool climb to fourth. The match page.

Crystal Palace sink, Hull hang on

Crystal Palace lost 2-0 to Newcastle after a first half of two shots on target: Will Osula, two minutes after the restart off a Jacob Murphy cross, and Harvey Barnes decided it (Sky Sports). At Hull, Dango Ouattara answered Oli McBurnie’s penalty (1-1): the Tigers stay unbeaten at home but have not won in six league games (Sky Sports). Sunderland hosted Leeds at 4.30pm.

Ligue 1: ten-man Lille go top

Ethan Mbappé had put Lille ahead on 24 minutes. Tanguy Nianzou’s 66th-minute red card left the visitors with ten, and Monaco levelled through Edan Diop on 74 without ever going in front. The 1-1 draw leaves both clubs on 15 points, Lille first on goal difference (our match report). At 4.15pm Marseille hosted Le Havre, Rennes played Strasbourg and Toulouse met Troyes, all in progress as we write.

PSG v Lyon tomorrow: a summit without its creators

Injured in training at the start of the week, Pavel Šulc has a meniscus lesion in his right knee: surgery, around four months out (our report). On Monday at the Parc des Princes, Corentin Tolisso takes the scoring role: “When you don’t have a real striker, I try to take that role,” says the Lyon captain. Opposite him, a PSG without Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, in for surgery in Doha early this week after his right-knee cruciate ligament rupture against Barcelona (4-2). The big match preview.

Serie A: Inter turn it around in stoppage time

Behind after Jimenez opened the scoring on 65 minutes, Inter snatched a 2-1 win over Fiorentina with two goals in stoppage time, one from Marcus Thuram. The Nerazzurri join Lazio at the top of Serie A. Our match report.

Tonight at the Camp Nou: the clásico without Courtois

Real Madrid play without Thibaut Courtois, out with flu; Andriy Lunin is expected in goal (our report). Tomorrow the Ballon d’Or is awarded in London, with the clásico’s two headliners, Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé, the favourites. Voting closed a month ago: tonight’s result will not change the award.
