Football essentials, 17 October: Liverpool come back at nine-man Brentford, City stay perfect, Chelsea win but lose Martínez

Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea all won on Saturday, and the top of the Premier League kept its order. The day was decided in the margins: two red cards at Brentford, a stretcher at Everton, boos at the Emirates.

Liverpool come back at nine-man Brentford, the last unbeaten side

Behind at the break to Keane Lewis-Potter’s header, Liverpool turned the game round after half-time: Victor Muñoz (62nd) and Alexander Isak, back from injury, sealed the 1-2 (70th). Yehor Yarmolyuk had seen red just before half-time for a headbutt on Jérémy Jacquet, Vitaly Janelt followed him, and Brentford’s first defeat of the season ends an eight-game unbeaten start. Liverpool paid for the win as well: Dominik Szoboszlai (hamstring) went off around the half-hour, Jeremie Frimpong followed after the break. Our report reads the whole match, and Liverpool climb to fifth.

Manchester City put the PSG defeat behind them, alone at the top

Three days after the 2-4 home defeat by PSG in the Champions League, Manchester City moved forward again: 3-2 against Ipswich, an Erling Haaland double (34th, 69th), a seventh straight league win. Phil Foden (19th) had opened the scoring, Daichi Maeda (21st) equalised, Jacob Flemming cut the gap from the penalty spot (90th). Enzo Maresca becomes the first manager to win his first seven Premier League games in charge of a club, six points clear before the trip to Aston Villa next Saturday. The full prediction sits on our match page.

Chelsea win at Everton, and lose Emi Martínez

Pedro Neto nearly settled the game on his own: one goal in the first seconds of the second half, another in the closing minutes (0-2), and Chelsea climb provisionally to fourth on their first clean sheet in the league since January. Everton taste a first defeat of the season. The win had a price: Emi Martínez, hurt at the head in a collision with Jarrad Branthwaite at a free-kick, went off on a stretcher, in a neck brace, after long minutes of treatment, replaced by Mike Penders. Our report tells the full story.

Fulham ease the pressure on Arbeloa, Iwobi does the rest

A first-half Alex Iwobi goal was enough against Hull (1-0): Fulham’s first win of the season, the first Premier League win of Álvaro Arbeloa’s managerial career, and a way out of last place. Ryan Sessegnon’s late red card, studs into Robinio Vaz’s Achilles tendon, made Craven Cottage sweat without changing the outcome. The match report.

Arsenal Women booed, the winless run grows

At the Emirates, the draw with Birmingham (1-1) earned boos from the crowd at the end: Océane Hurtré had put the visitors ahead early in the second half, Olivia Smith equalised in the 66th minute. Six points from six matches, five games without a win in the WSL, the longest run in the club’s history, and eighth place, nine points behind a Manchester City side with a game in hand. The pressure on Renée Slegers keeps building. The match report.

Ligue 3: Cannes fall for the first time, Rouen miss the boat

In France, the tenth matchday of Ligue 3 brought down the last unbeaten sides: Cannes, down to ten, lost 1-2 at Villefranche for a first defeat of the season, and second-placed Rouen let top spot slip with a 1-3 loss at Charléty against Paris 13 Atlético. Versailles, held by Thionville, move on to the podium. The full round-up.

Marseille: Genesio wants commitment before Angers

Beaten by Olympiacos in the Europa League on Thursday (0-1), Marseille look for breathing room at Angers on Sunday. On Saturday, in his press conference, Bruno Genesio set the diagnosis: “We sorely lack commitment in both boxes.” Set pieces, costly again on Thursday, were worked on before the trip to Maine-et-Loire. Our report covers the press conference, and our Angers against Marseille prediction page is ready for Sunday.
